What “new old stock” means for an inventory review

New old stock is generally unused inventory that has remained unsold for an extended period. It may be an older model, discontinued SKU, excess production, canceled project purchase or stock left after a product-line change.

Age by itself does not determine value. Exact model, packaging condition, completeness and current demand matter more.

Packaging details that affect the review

“New” can describe factory sealed, open-box unused, new without retail packaging or unused with damaged cartons. If cartons are crushed, water-marked, relabeled or missing seals, include that in the condition notes.

One representative carton photo, one model-label photo and one pallet overview are usually more useful than dozens of identical product photos.

How to list discontinued inventory

Use the manufacturer model or part number from the product label, not only an old purchase-order description. If inventory contains multiple revisions or bundles, put each on a separate line. Include end-of-life status only when documented.

A practical first submission

Start with the list you already use internally. Useful columns are manufacturer, model or part number, quantity, condition, packaging, location and notes. Use the inventory manifest template if you need a clean structure.

Frequently asked questions

Does new old stock have to be factory sealed?

No. Open-box unused items can also be reviewed. Describe packaging and product condition accurately.

Yes. Discontinued and older unused inventory is part of the new old stock category.
A clear model label, a representative product or carton, and a pallet or warehouse overview are usually enough for an initial review.
Only if your company policy requires it. Do not spend labor relabeling inventory just for a first review.

Prepare your inventory

Four details make new old stock inventory easier to evaluate.

A useful first submission does not need to be perfect. Start with the information you already have, then add the details that help identify the equipment and the lot.

Exact model or part number

Use the manufacturer label or SKU whenever possible. Specific models are more useful than broad descriptions such as “switch,” “server” or “laptop.”

Quantity by model

List the count for each model or configuration. If exact counts are not ready, a reasonable pallet, carton or lot estimate can still help start the review.

Condition & packaging

Note whether the inventory is factory sealed, open-box, used, returned, untested or incomplete. Mention damaged cartons or missing accessories when known.

Location & representative photos

Include the city/state and a few clear photos of the lot, model labels and packaging. This helps the purchasing team understand scale and logistics.
